Hello Friends!

Thank you for joining me once again for another blog tutorial. As summer comes to an end and I had some time to reflect, my mind wandered around my sister’s bridal shower. I wish I had taken the opportunity to create some more DIYs. At the time I didn’t think of the idea for a DIY cake topper. However, wouldn’t it be such a neat project to make?

Cake toppers seem to be a new trend for party decor. This thought got me thinking that it would be interesting to create a Miss to Mrs cake topper! Using the same steps below, the possibilities are endless for cake topper ideas for the next occasion you are celebrating. Keep reading for my take on how to create your own Miss to Mrs cake topper.

Tips

  • Use paper that will allow for blending with the Tombow Dual Brush pens. I recommend Strathmore mixed media paper.
  • You will want the cake topper to be sturdy. Be sure to use paper that will be sturdy, such as cardstock.
  • Repurpose your cake topper by removing the wooden skewer. Use as party decor or a photo booth prop.

Step 1: Sketch Design

I always feel better when I first sketch a design before I commit to paper and ink. The sketch allows me to make changes, correct spacing and play around with my lettering. For the Miss to Mrs design, I lettered ‘Miss’ and ‘Mrs’ in big script letters. I placed the word ‘to’ in between both Miss and Mrs, using a smaller size. I lettered it using sans serif style. I went back to the design and emphasized curves and angles. Once you are happy with your sketch, you can move onto your next step.

Step 2: Create Lettering

To create your lettering, start by lettering your design using the Tombow dual brush pen in 761. The light pink base allows for easy blending with the other colours. This is also how your lettering will start to take shape with colour.

Then add 703 to the middle of each stroke and 772 to the bottoms of each stroke. Blend out using 703.

Using N75, I added a shadow to the left of each downstroke. I love the affect that the shadow creates!

Lastly add little hearts for detail.

Step 3: Glue Lettering to Cardstock

Once the ink has dried, cut out your design using scissors. Follow the natural overall shape of your design. Next, use the Tombow power mini glue tape to secure the design to cardboard or any other sturdy material of your choice. Using scissors, cut along the edge removing any excess cardboard.

Step 4: Create Handle

To create the handle of the cake topper, wrap the Tombow washi tape around the wooden skewer. This is to create a pattern on the wooden skewer. Once complete, secure the wooden skewer to the design using washi tape. Washi tape can always be removed without any traces for your design to be repurposed.
