Mermaid Tail BookmarkHello Friends!

I’m back today with another fun crafting tutorial using Tombow USA products. I love mermaids and I love to read! Combine the two and we get a mermaid tail bookmark. While it’s fun to shop around for bookmarks, its easily as fun or even much more fun to create your own! I really wanted to highlight the Tombow Mono glue pen in this tutorial as I think this product takes the bookmark to a new level.ย Keep reading to see how you can create your own mermaid tail bookmark!

Tips

  • Do not use watercolour to apply the colour as this will wash away the glue from the Tombow Mono glue pen.
  • I like to have sturdy bookmarks which is why I like to apply card stock. Feel free to skip this step.
  • Attach a tassel to add a cute addition to the bookmark.

Step 1: Draw The Mermaid Tail

Using the Tombow Mono pencil draw an outline for your mermaid tail. I started with two lines that increasingly get narrow at the top. At the top, I drew two leaf-like shapes to create the fins of the mermaid tail. You can always google some images of mermaid tails to get an idea.

Step 2: Add Scales & Lettering

Next, still using the Tombow Mono drawing pencil, sketch in the middle of the tail, the words ‘Have a splash reading’. This is so you have an idea of where the words will be in order for you to create the mermaid scales around the lettering.

Take the Tombow mono glue pen and start creating scales where appropriate. Since it might be hard to see the glue from the glue pen, try looking at your page at eye level. You will see the shine of the glue pen. To create a mermaid scale, I drew an upside down ‘U’ shape and connected the ends with two curved lines (see picture below). I concentrated the scales on the main body of the mermaid tail. For the fins, I created lines using the glue pen (see picture below).

Step 3: Add Colour

Take your Tombow dual brush pen colours in 636, 603 and 623 and add colour to the bottom of the mermaid tail. Be sure to start with the darkest shade and blending into the lightest shade. Next, I added 373 to the middle of the tail ensuring that the colour is blended well into the purple. Lastly, I used 192 and 243 to finish off adding colour to the fins. Again, ensure that all of the colours are well blended.

Did you see how beautiful the mermaid scales appeared once the colour from the Tombow dual brush pens were added?! Pretty cool, right!

Step 4: Letter

Using your previous sketch as a guideline, use the Tombow Fudenosuke brush pen to letter the phrase ‘Have a splash reading’. Once dried, use the Tombow Mono eraser to get rid of any pencil lines. Outline the entire mermaid tail with the Tombow Mono drawing pen.

Step 5: Cut & Add Cardstock Background

Lastly, apply the Tombow permanent adhesive to the back of the mermaid tail and stick it onto white cardstock. Next, cut around the mermaid tail leaving a thin white cardstock border.
